1. Structure and characteristics of DC-link film capacitors
DC-link film capacitors, as the name implies, are capacitors made of thin film dielectric materials, mainly used in DC circuits, especially in applications requiring high capacity, low ESR (equivalent series resistance) and low ESL (equivalent series inductance). Its structure usually consists of two layers of metal foil or metallized film as electrodes, with an extremely thin insulating medium (such as polypropylene, polyester, etc.) sandwiched in the middle, which is formed by winding or laminating. This design not only provides a large capacitance value, but also ensures good frequency response and temperature stability.
2. The role of DC-link film capacitors in inverters
In inverter circuits, DC-link film capacitors play a core role in the smooth filtering of DC power. The inverter first converts the input AC power into DC power through a rectifier bridge, and this process generates a large amount of pulsating DC components, namely AC ripples. If these ripples are not processed, they will directly affect the output performance of the inverter, causing unstable motor operation and even damage to the equipment. At this point, the role of the DC-link film capacitor becomes prominent:
Smoothing DC voltage: The capacitor can store charge and release it when needed, thereby effectively smoothing the voltage fluctuations on the DC bus, providing an approximately constant DC voltage to the inverter part, and ensuring that the motor receives stable and clean power.
Filtering AC ripple: Using its capacitance characteristics, the capacitor can absorb and store the energy of the AC ripple, discharge at the peak of the ripple, and charge at the valley, thereby effectively reducing the AC component on the DC bus and improving the quality of power.
Energy buffering and balancing: When the inverter starts, accelerates, decelerates, or the load changes suddenly, the DC bus capacitor can quickly absorb or release energy to help maintain the stability of the DC bus voltage and prevent equipment failures caused by instantaneous voltage fluctuations.
Protect circuit safety: By balancing the voltage and current in the circuit and reducing harmonic interference, the DC bus capacitor can also effectively protect the electronic components inside the inverter from current shocks and extend the life of the equipment.
3. Considerations in practical applications
Although DC-link film capacitors play a vital role in inverter circuits, their selection and use also need to consider a variety of factors, such as the rated voltage, capacity, temperature characteristics, life, etc. of the capacitor. In addition, with the continuous advancement of inverter technology, the demand for miniaturization, high reliability and long life of capacitors is increasing, which has promoted the continuous innovation of film capacitor materials, processes and designs.
